Golf: West Wales

West Wales is home to a number of world-class links courses and some of the most aesthetically stunning views you are likely to find anywhere. Whilst courses like Gower offer quality championship parkland tracks, the breathtaking vast coastline - with courses such as Pennard, Machynys and Ashburnham to name a few - has to be sampled.

Gower Golf Club is a Donald Steel parkland design that is well known for its subtle breaks on its greens, and also frequently plays host to wondrous weddings and conferences. This 6,441-yard course is the ideal venue for a corporate weekend away for golfers of all abilities.

Two miles from the tourist town of Newport, situated in Pembrokeshire's Coastal National Park, is the 80-year-old

Newport Links Golf Club. As with many golfing venues in Wales, the Newport Links provides a lot more than a top quality golf course, with external activities such as walking, fishing and bird watching to be enjoyed.

Close to another one of West Wales' main citites, Swansea, lies the elegant Pennard Golf Club. Dubbed 'The Links in the Sky', Pennard is without doubt one of the region's most memorable golf courses and provides a superbly tranquil setting only eight miles from Swansea. Holes such as the 351-yard 7th hole that runs out towards the sea will amaze even the most travelled of golfers.

Travel 50 miles west of Pennard and you will find the oldest affiliated golf club in Wales, Tenby. This immensely-challenging narrow links venue runs along the South Beach and challenges golfers to hit straight consistently, as well as coping with impressively quick greens. It's still used regularly today for Welsh Amateur Championships.

Another host of prestigious championships is the Ashburnham Golf Club. Formed 116 years ago, Asburnham is a traditional undulating links course, which has hosted Amateur Home Internationals and provides a stern challenge with towering banks of rough and the natural elements often coming into play.

Gary Nicklaus, son of 18-time Major winner Jack, designed the £3.5m Machynys Peninsula. A links course compromising of 25 acres of new lakes, Machynys is very much in the modern era. A different challenge to the older links courses in Wales, but is undoubtedly a not-to-be-missed track which presents the golfer with numerous shot-shaping challenges.
