Golf clothing has evolved almost beyond recognition over the last 20 years, with lightweight stretch fabrics banishing thick woolly fleeces from the golf course forever.
The relatively new ‘layering’ concept is also now widely seen as the best way to maximise your warmth and movement, while reducing the chances of overheating and sweating as you walk and play.
A brand that only focuses on golf, FootJoy has always been at the forefront of testing new fabrics that might help golfers improve their performance and on course comfort, and its new Autumn/Winter 2017 collection is no different.
Keen to test the new styles and materials, we spoke to FootJoy and arranged for two Golf Monthly readers to receive a range of clothing. Armed with their new polo shirts, mid-layers and waterproof jackets, 7-handicappers Nick Roddis and David Walters put them through their paces on their home courses over a number of weeks, before joining us for a round at West Hill GC to share their final feedback on how it all performed.

Nick’s jacket feedback “I carry my bag a lot so I like that this FootJoy DryJoys Tour LTS jacket is very lightweight and can be rolled up easily. There’s nothing worse than being swamped by a waterproof top and thankfully this was nice and fitted. The drawstrings at the side and the Velcro wrists all helped my fit, and I even wore it to the rugby one week on a humid day and it looked great and was really breathable ”
Nick’s polo and mid-layer feedback “I found the mid-layer was really breathable compared to stuff I’ve worn in the past thanks to the mesh like panels it has down the sides. Often I’d be cold at the start and then sweating 4 or 5 holes in, but with this pullover I felt my temperature was much more constant. Playing golf you don’t want your clothing to impede your swing or sag, and this didn’t do that either. I am also the sort of guy who wears golf gear in everyday life, and with this FootJoy stuff I’d be happy to do that.”
Tester: David Walters Club: West Kent GC
David’s jacket feedback “My first impression was how lightweight the jacket is and it clearly gave me a full-range of motion once I put it on and started swinging. It was comfortable to wear and the fit was clearly designed for golf. I liked the narrower cuffs that both keep rain out and can tuck behind your watch. The high collar is also a nice touch to stop any rain dripping down your neck. ”
David’s polo and mid-layer feedback “I definitely prefer the traditional style of the mid-layer, which has just a little bit of detailing. When I had all three garments on together it was very comfortable, they definitely work in harmony together with how thin the material is, which is a big improvement from the FootJoy stuff I’ve worn in the past, which were heavier and thicker.”
Tested By You is a regular Golf Monthly magazine feature where our readers get to test, and usually keep, new golf clothing, clubs and shoes. To be involved, keep an eye out on the Golf Monthly Forum, where we post all our reader opportunities.
