Tested By You - Under Armour Gore-Tex Paclite Waterproofs
Ever since Jordan Spieth burst onto the scene, Under Armour’s share of the golf market has grown. But, as anyone who has ever owned leaky waterproofs will know, producing the perfect suit for the unpredictable British climate isn’t easy – it takes a mix of experience and expertise.
Under Armour’s lightweight waterproofs benefit from the renowned Gore-Tex membrane, which keeps water out while letting your body vapour escape for added comfort.
They also boast Under Armour’s Storm technology on the fabric’s exterior, which helps keep water at bay and allows the jacket and trousers to dry more quickly after a soaking. The Paclite element means the material is also thin and lightweight, making it easy to fold up and store in your golf bag.
Keen to find out if this offering was a Spieth-style success or one to swerve in 2018, we enlisted the help of two readers for this latest edition of Tested By You.
After being sent a suit each, our golfing duo put them through their paces over a number of weeks, before joining us for a round at West Hill Golf Club to share their final verdicts.

Reader name: Richard Hart Handicap: 12 Club: Blackmoor GC Tested: Under Armour Storm Gore-Tex Paclite – Jacket £240 and trouser £190
Richard’s jacket feedback My first impressions were that the sporty styling was great and that it was a snug fit without any baggy material. Out on the course, I found it very easy to swing in. Arguably the most noticeable thing was how light it was to both wear and carry, as I like to store my waterproofs in my bag throughout the year. In the past I’ve found Gore-Tex jackets to be noisy and bulky, but this was a more athletic fit. I also found myself wearing it to the football, too, as it kept the wind out so much better than my other coats.
Richard’s trouser feedback The trousers were probably a bit tighter than what I’m used to, with the tapered cut, zip and button leg, so they took a bit longer to put on. The benefit of that, though, is they didn’t flap around as much when I was playing. Like the jacket, I could roll these trousers up easily and not worry about the weight they added to my bag.
Reader name: Kevin Risby Handicap: 9 Club: Woldingham GC Tested: Under Armour Storm Gore-Tex Paclite – Jacket £240 and trouser £190
Kevin’s jacket feedback The jacket more than met my expectations, especially the performance. I’d also happily wear it to the park with my kids and out and about. It was very lightweight on the course, which meant I didn’t really notice how many layers I was wearing. The only fault for me was the tightness of the seam-sealed zips, but given the protection it gave me during some really wet rounds, this was a fair compromise. On one round with my dad I also noticed how quickly my jacket dried after it stopped raining compared to his, which means I can just leave this suit in my bag all the time.
Kevin’s trouser feedback The trousers were extremely comfortable and so light that I wore them during every round after I received them. I particularly liked the Velcro hip adjusters, which are much easier to use than drawstrings. This meant the trousers never fell down, as some of my other pairs have certainly done in the past.
