Monty hopes to inspire Garcia at Pebble Beach
The 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach will see European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie meeting with the struggling Sergio Garcia in a bid to boost his confidence
The 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach will see European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie meeting with the struggling Sergio Garcia in a bid to boost his confidence.
Garcia was tipped to become the main challenger to Tiger Woods in Major championships when he burst onto the scene at the 1999 US PGA Championship in Medinah, finishing second to the American.
Now, after many close Major failures, Garcia has dropped to a world ranking of 32 and risks missing the Ryder Cup.
Montgomerie explained: "Sergio is the main guy I want to talk to.
"I'll give him a pep talk saying 'come on, I need you, we need you'. It might spur him to better things this summer."
Garcia has come so close to Major success, with two second-place finishes at the USPGA in 1999 and 2008, a tie for third at the US Open in 2005, a tie for fourth at the Masters in 2004 and a second place at the 2007 Open Championship when he lost to Padraig Harrington in a playoff at Carnoustie.
However this season Garcia was 45th at Augusta and has struggled with consistency on the PGA Tour.

Montgomerie hopes a confidence-boosting chat can help Garcia at the 2010 US Open, boosting the Ryder Cup team in the long-term.
Montgomerie added: "The Spanish have been a fantastic asset to our team over the years.
"The passion they bring to that event is second to none, Sergio has been no exception."
