Lee Westwood ready for US Open glory

The Englishman is preparing to win his first major at Chambers Bay next week.

Lee Westwood has said that living in the United States has proved to be an important factor in helping him prepare for the US Open.

The 23-time European Tour winner is yet to win a major, with his best attempts to date second place finishes at the Masters and the Open in 2010.

Westwood's best finish at a US Open was in 2008 when he finished third and one shot behind Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate.

The Englishman believes that his move to Florida a couple of years ago is improving his game ahead of a busy part of the year.

"It's really just a case of being able to practise the whole year round, which makes a big difference," he said in an interview with Dunlop Golf.

"It's something [winning a major] that I want to achieve but I wouldn't say it's my primary motivating factor. I don't put any time limit on it."

Westwood, who finished T46 at the Masters in April, also said this year's win at the Indonesian Masters has helped him.

"There's been some good form and some mixed form," he said.

"I'm happy to have a win under my belt already and there's still plenty of golf to be played and three more majors to go at."

Westwood hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2010, when he secured the St. Jude Classic title.

However, he said that the atmosphere surrounding him in the United States is conducive to feeling good about his game.

"Lots of European and American players live around Old Palm so I'm always bumping into lots of them.

"I have lots of friends that I can play with and the practice facilities here are brilliant.

"Most of the guys are a lot of fun. Not too many last long on the tour without a good sense of humour," he added.

With the US Open just under a week away, Westwood said certain aspects of his game are well placed to give him a chance to contend.

"I've always had a good reputation from tee to green but I feel I've made good progress with my short game over the last couple of years.

"You have to have the attitude that you're always looking for improvements in all aspects of your game," he said.
