England's Gary Boyd qualifies for US Open

Gary Boyd's first full season on the European Tour has proved successful, after qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach.

Boyd secured his US Open place at Walton Heath on Monday, shooting rounds of 67 and 69, qualifying for the event for the first time in his career.

The 23-year-old from Northamptonshire, who competed in the 2008 Open Championship at Birkdale, qualified ahead of Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke.

Boyd commented: "My aim is to play in all four of the Majors, then it will be a case of trying to win one."

There was more qualifying joy in the form of Scotland's Martin Laird. The 27-year-old shot 69 in the first round, putting him in a dangerous position, but pulled it back with a second round of 63.

The 36-hole qualifier in Texas saw the likes of Englishman Brian Davis miss out, along with Aaron Baddeley and Rory Sabbatini.
