Dustin Johhnson has the clubhouse lead on four under-par after playing both his first and second rounds of the weather delayed US Open on Friday.

The American who came so close to winning the tournament last year will be very satisfied after a hard day’s graft on a course where the weather dramatically improved from the storms on Thursday.

Johnson is tied for the lead with Andrew Landry who was the surprise first round leader and who had to play just one shot all day, a birdie putt that he holed after the weather delay stopped his round prematurely on Thursday evening.

There were four other players who managed to get their first two rounds complete on Friday and finish under par.

Scott Piercy and Sergio Garcia are both on two under following rounds of 68 and 70, while England’s Andy Sullivan is a further shot back after playing some very solid golf.

Round of the day was from Daniel Summerhays, whose 65 included five birdies and no bogeys and is also on one under.

Although scoring conditions were slightly more friendly than on Thursday there were still players who struggled on the tricky Oakmont set-up.

World Number One Jason Day is in slight danger of missing the cut following a first round 76, his second round was going better though and with three holes to play in his second round he was at five over for the tournament

Rory McIlroy had some serious issues after shooting 77 in his first round and would have been happy to have had the rest of the day off to work on his game before starting his second round on Saturday.

Jordan Spieth shot 72 in the first round and is poised to move up the leaderboard if he can have a good start to Saturday in his second round.

The weather is set fair for the weekend in Pittsburgh, which will be a relief to the organisers as the tournament should now finish on time on Sunday evening

However there were signs on Friday night that the course is starting to quicken up meaning it will get harder and harder to score on.
