Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and John Daly on a leaderboard at the same time. Three generations of People's Champions. The thousands of fans that trooped through the gates had plenty to cheer as the temperature hit 90 degrees with 75% humidity.
McIlroy shot his first bogey-free round of the year, a five under par 67. He said he loved the sticky paspalum grass at the Ocean Course. Yesterday he smoked it. "There was no wind. It was flat calm and I really thought that I had to take advantage of the conditions," McIlroy said. "It's a great score to build on. We know there's bad weather coming. It won't be like that again."
It is 21 years since Daly won his first major at the 1991 US PGA Championship (McIlroy was two years old). The last time he finished in the top 10 of a major was in 1995 when he won the Open at St Andrews. The fans still love him. "They were getting good and loud on the back nine. I love it," Daly said. "I'm just kind of loosey-goosey out there. And it feels good."
Woods was feeling good, too. His three under par 69 completed the first time since 2000 that he has shot in the 60s in three straight majors. "Anything in the 60s is going to be a good start in a major," he said. His pants weren't looking so good though. Looked like he'd had an accident. It was hot and sweaty out there on the links.
