Time for a break
With a few of the world's best players in need of a break, the season's Final Major represents a great opportunity for someone to step up and grab the Wanamaker Trophy
So, no sooner than we start talking about Lee Westwood needing that Major breakthrough than he's pulled out of the USPGA Championship due to an ongoing injury that now appears to be hampering his chances of being fit in time for the Ryder Cup.
Westwood's not the only one suffering, of course. Sergio Garcia is looking to take a two-month break after the USPGA and it would be no surprise to see Tiger Woods go back into hiding after what can only be described as a horror few months - both on and off the course.
It's a real shame. There's always been a feeling that the USPGA is the least important of the four Majors, but it's a Major nonetheless and for the climax to the season you want everyone firing on all cylinders.
But, maybe, there lies the problem. A golf season these days seems to have no definite beginning and end, and maybe it's a case of too many air miles for some. For Garcia it's a case of rediscovering his love for the game. "I need the break, I need to miss the game a little bit," said the Spaniard.
Whether the sheer volume of golf on offer at the moment is a good or bad thing, you could argue the case either way. What's certain is that with a few of the world's best players out of sorts, including Phil Mickelson's if Sunday's final round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is anything to go by, there's a huge chance for someone to step up and grab the Wanamaker Trophy.
