Curse of the Association of Golf Writers strikes again. Followed Rory McIlroy all the way to the 6th hole. He missed the first four greens and bogeyed the 4th. Hit his second to the par-5 5th through the back of the green and chipped poorly. Only a par. I decide to give him a break and head off for an ice cream. Wham!
Birdie at the 7th. Pick him up again at the 8th. Bham! Bogey. Leave him after the 9th then he almost drives the green at the 10th. Birdie. Thank you ma'am. Pick him up at the 15th. Bogey. We promise to follow someone else next time.
Walked a few holes with McIlroy's father, Gerry. Told me Lake Michigan is the size of England - it's 400 miles long and 100 miles wide. Gerry said Rory told him that. Sadly, it's Rory's best stat of the day.
We would like to point out that, although Golf Monthly spoke to Dustin Johnson earlier in the week, we were nowhere near him or that, ahem, bunker on the 18th.
Never saw Martin Kaymer or Bubba Watson hit a single shot on the back nine. That's why they made the play-off. Congratulations Martin Kaymer, 2010 US PGA Championship. He shook my hand on Wednesday. Didn't seem to do him any harm. Maybe there isn't a curse, after all. Touch wood.
