Giant cheese hats
Yes, as Paul Mahoney discovers, there are plenty of ways to pass the time when your tee time is delayed due to fog, as Paul Casey and Ian Poulter would demonstrate at Whistling Straits
Paul Casey and Ian Poulter spent yesterday's fog delay tweeting photographs of each other wearing giant cheese hats on their heads like Wisconsin's Green Bay Packer football fans - the cheeseheads. Check out twitter.com/ianjamespoulter.
"Yep, we were bored stiff," Casey said after his even-par round of 72. But there was nothing boring about his round of four birdies and four bogeys. "I really had very little clue where the ball was going," Casey said.
"Two chip-ins bailed me out big time. The one on the 17th might make the highlights reel after almost shanking it off the tee. The old swing is back but I have to tame it. It's fun but there were some shots that went sideways."
Casey was in the locker room afterwards scoffing a cake that could havedoubled as a doorstop. "These are awesome," he said. "You get such an energy kick. I can work it off in the gym later," he said laughing.
His Ryder Cup captainwill be delighted to hear Casey coming back into form and sounding chipper, too. A wild card for Celtic Manor seems assured. But it's not such good news for Colin Montgomerie as far as Sergio Garcia is concerned. The Spaniard has been in wretched form this year. He has all but accepted he will miss October's Ryder Cup by announcing he will take time out after the USPGA to clear his muddled head. Only victory at Whistling Straits will cancel his holiday.
"Unless Sergio finishes extremely high here, in the top one, we won't be seeing him at Celtic Manor," Monty said. "He will take a two-month break and I think that's right. He's got stale with the game."
After a first round 78, Garcia might as well pack his bucket and spade and beachball right now.
