Whistling Straits hole by hole guide: hole 7 - Shipwreck / 221 yards / Par 3
This shore hugging par 3 is set to provide much drama during the Championship with its spectacular views over Lake Michigan and a very long green that will make club selection difficult. A steep slope flanks the left side of the green and to the right is a steep drop off with only a few bunkers separating the green from Lake Michigan. You would certainly take three each time you stand up on this tee during the week.
At the 2010 USPGA Championship, Nick Watney came into the final round with a three shot lead, but ended up losing that advantage in a disastrous round on the seventh. He sent his tee shot into Lake Michigan to take a triple bogey on the way to a crushing 81. Watney made a piece of history in the process as his final round became the highest by a 54-hole leader at the tournament since the format changed to stroke play.
The name of the hole turned out to be rather prophetic for Watney's hopes of a first major.
