A guide to hole 17 at Whistling Straits, called Pinched Nerve.
Whistling Straits hole by hole - hole 17 - Pinched Nerve / 223 yards / Par 3
A brutal par 3 that leaves no room for error. The railway sleepers that hold up the green on the left side are a trademark of Pete Dye's golf course design, and act as the face to the sand traps if you are unlucky to miss the green to the left. Like the other par 3s on this course, the green is large and therefore you will not be guaranteed par if you find the wrong part of the surface. The safest line off the tee is towards the right half of the green as the worst danger to be found on this hole is certainly left.
Martin Kaymer sunk an impressive birdie putt from 15 feet on 17 as he tussled with Bubba Watson in a two-man play-off in the 2010 USPGA Championship. Both players were attempting to win their first majors as Kaymer sank his pressure putt. They then headed to 18, where Watson found water, before sending a bunker shot against the pin. Kaymer's birdie on 17 was the moment the tournament swung in his favour.
