Kaymer takes flight at USPGA Championship
This round of 65 raises Martin Kaymer into contention at the 2015 USPGA Championship
After the second round of the 2015 USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits Martin Kaymer had talked about posting “one of those five, six-under rounds to give myself a chance”. He talked about holing a few more putts too. It’s all easier said than done, but Kaymer was true to his word in yesterday’s third round. In fact he went one better, shooting an exceptional 65, seven under par in inviting conditions on the Straits Course.
After scores of 70 in both of the first two rounds, Kaymer sits at 11 under par and in a share of fifth place going into today’s final round, and four shots off Jason Day’s lead. Only one golfer in the field bettered Kaymer’s 65, and that was his playing partner Branden Grace, who shot 64 to sit a shot better than Kaymer at 12 under par.
“I hit the ball very well today, the same as yesterday and on Thursday,” said Germany's Kaymer, 30, after his round. “But today there were a couple of putts, a couple bonuses here and there.
“It's a funny feeling when you play with someone that is playing as great as I played today - even better on a lot of holes. Branden made a lot of putts too – he has a great short game – and he didn't miss many fairways. So we really fed off each other, and it really pushes you. You need to keep going, keep going, and that's what Branden and I did today.”
Kaymer won the USPGA Championship in 2010, the last time the event was played at Whistling Straits.
“Five years ago, I think I was five or six shots behind after the third day, and all of a sudden I was leading after six holes on the golf course,” he said. “It's one of those things in major championships – so much can happen in the last round. I'm just glad that I put myself in a position to have a chance tomorrow.”
