2015 USPGA betting: the favourites

The return of Rory McIlroy to competitive golf has got us excited...but how confident are you he can compete towards the top of the leaderboard this weekend?

He will certainly be among the favourites to win the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits, just as he won at Valhalla last year.

Jordan Spieth is another who is almost certain to be in contention if his form in the other majors this year is anything to go by.

The aforementioned players would be safe bets if you're planning to do some USPGA betting this week. Now let's have an in-depth look at the rest of the top four players likely to be challenging for the Wanamaker Trophy...

Jordan Spieth - (7/1) - odds accurate at time of writing

After coming close at Augusta National last year, Jordan Spieth made no mistake in Georgia four months ago. His Masters win confirmed there was potentially a serial major winner within him.

He backed that theory up with a commanding performance at the US Open, navigating the much-criticised greens of Chambers Bay.

A play-off place at St Andrews was just one shot away for the Texan, with a John Deere Classic win sandwiched in before the Open. It's not surprising this likable young champion is considered the favourite for the year's big climax.

Rory McIlroy - (10/1)

After his Open and USPGA Championship double last year, many people would've found it hard to believe that McIlroy would be without another major heading into Whistling Straits.

However, Spieth's rise and McIlroy's injury problems have conspired against him, leaving him with just the USPGA title left to go for in 2015.

It's difficult to know what to expect from him, given it was only last month he posted a picture to his Instagram account of himself on crutches.

Whether he is able to contend will be one of the many intriguing storylines that develop over the course of the four days.

Jason Day - (12/1)

If you had to pick one word to describe Jason Day, it would probably be 'nearly.'

Take his major form this year. Vertigo struck him at Chambers Bay with his game looking sharp. It was clear that Day was struggling and he eventually dropped off on Sunday.

He followed that with another close call at the Open. He missed out on a play-off by a shot before jetting off to Canada and winning a well-earned PGA Tour title.

It will be fascinating to see whether he can channel his St Andrews disappointment into his first major title.

Bubba Watson - (14/1)

You won't need to remind Bubba Watson of what happened the last time he was at Whistling Straits for the USPGA Championship.

After entering into a play-off with Martin Kaymer, Watson found water and a bunker on his way to defeat.

The big-hitting American comes into this year's tournament in form, following his second placed finish at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Armed with the knowledge of how to successfully get around the Straits course, it's conceivable Watson could be lifting the trophy come Sunday night.
