The USA team are the holders of the Ryder Cup and start as favourites to win in Rome. However, winning in Europe is not something a USA side has done since 1993. So can this year's visiting side buck the trend?
When the USA won the Ryder Cup 19-9 at Whistling Straits two years ago, with the youngest team in its history and the largest victory margin since 1975, it became a common narrative that this could be the start of a period of USA dominance in the event. This view is less prevalent now. A lot has happened in the past two years.
Much of it is to do with LIV Golf. All of Europe’s LIV golfers were ruled out of selection for the Ryder Cup, as you need to be a member of the European Tour to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup. But the USA team is run not by the PGA Tour but the PGA of America, and LIV golfers’ membership of this body has not yet expired. However only one LIV golfer, Brooks Koepka, has been selected.
Another factor in some pundits changing their attitude comes from a recognition of the recent pattern of the Ryder Cup results: in Europe, the USA side rarely win. The US were favourites the last time the Cup was held in Europe, in France in 2018, but went down 17½-10½. They were also favourites at Valderrama in 1997 and The Belfry in 2002, and lost both those encounters, too. The US has not won in Europe since 1993.
The USA side start as favourites, but in the last 12 Ryder Cups the favourite has lost as often as they have won.
The schedule for the tournament looks like this:
- Day 1 - Friday September 29: 4 x foursomes (am); 4 x fourballs (pm)
- Day 2 - Saturday September 30: 4 x foursomes (am); 4 x fourballs (pm)
- Day 3 - Sunday October 1: 12 x singles
Each of the 28 matches is worth a point each, with matches ending in a draw worth ½ point to each side. The team with most points overall wins the Ryder Cup. If it ends as a 14-14 draw, the holders retain the cup, which in this case is the USA.
