The first time the Major event that was played at Royal Liverpool was in in 1897, where amateur Harold Hilton claimed the top spot.

As well as the final time the tournament was played without qualifying, the 1897 tournament marked the last time that the Open Championship was played with no cut.

1902 saw Scotland's Sandy Herd win the 42nd Open Championship, which was the second time Hoylake hosted the tournament.

Herd finished one stroke ahead of runners-up James Braid and Harry Vardon.

The third time the tournament was hosted at Royal Liverpool in 1907 was the first time that a non-Briton won the Open Championship.

French-born Arnaud Massy took the top spot at the tournament finishing two strokes ahead of the 1913 Open Championship winner at Hoylake, J.H. Taylor.

The 59th Open Championship, held at Royal Liverpool in 1924, saw Walter Hagen win his second Open Championship. The victory was the fifth of Hagen's eventual 11 Major championship wins.

The next time the Open Championship was hosted at Hoylake in 1930 also saw an American golfer clinching the top spot.

Amateur Bobby Jones rose to victory in 1930 winning by two strokes, despite being three over par. Jones became the first player since John Ball in 1890 to win both the British Amateur and British Open in the same year.

The Open Championships held at Hoylake in 1936 and 1947 both saw British players win the tournament, namely Alf Padgham and Fred Daly.

Hoylake's 1956 Open Championship saw Australian Peter Thomson clinch his third consecutive Open title. Thomson went on to win 5 Open Championships in total.

At the 96th Open Championship in 1967, Roberto de Vicenzo won his only major championship title having finished the tournament two strokes ahead of defending champion Jack Nicklaus.

2006 saw Tiger Woods claim his second victory at the Open Championship. Woods finished two strokes ahead of runners-up Chris DiMarco, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia.

2014 will see Woods return to the field after his injury and competing for his chance to win the Claret Jug.
