Rory McIlroy claimed his first Open title and third major championship in thrilling fashion at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

McIlroy became the seventh player to win the Open Championship wire-to-wire and the third player in the history of golf to win three majors by the age of 25, joining Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

The Ulsterman captured the Open Championship title with 14 Nike clubs and the RZN Black ball in the bag.

"The Open is the one that we all want and the one that we all strive for, and to be able to hold the Claret Jug is an incredible feeling," said McIlroy.

McIlroy used the RZN black ball and the VRS Covert 2.0 Tour driver - the best driver/ball combination he says he's ever had - to average 328 yards off the tee. To contextualise, the field averaged 287 yards.

He also averaged 1.53 putts per hole with the Nike Method 006 putter.

Another club that proved extremely useful on a firm, narrow golf course was the Nike MMPROTO 2-iron, which McIlroy put into play at the Scottish Open last week.

McIlroy - who wore the Nike Lunar Control shoe and apparel from Nike Golf's Performance Collection - is the second Nike athlete to win a major this year, following Michelle Wie's triumph in the U.S. Women's Open last month.
