Open Championship 2014: By the Numbers

Golf Monthly takes a look at some facts and figures surrounding the up and coming Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

13 - The amount of bunkers that have been removed from the Royal Liverpool course since 2006, leaving a total of 82.

577 - The longest hole on the Royal Liverpool rota, the 16th hole is 577 yards yet it also played the easiest during the 2006 Open Championship.

12 - Following this year's Open Championship, Royal Liverpool will have hosted the prestigious tournament 12 times. (1897, 1902, 1907, 1913, 1924, 1930, 1936, 1947, 1956, 1967, 2006, 2014)

9 - The number of links courses in Scotland or England that the event takes place on. Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland however has hosted the championship in 1951 and has been announced to return there in 2019.

72 - The number of holes competitors have to play in the tournament, with a cut after 36 holes that limits the tournament to the top 70 players and ties.

300 - The number of golf courses that Harry Colt, who redesigned Royal Liverpool in the early 20th century, designed amongst his lifetime.

Colt played as a British Amateur frequently entering into the Amateur Championship. The architect also played in the Open Championship in 1891.

288 - The number of available places on the starting line-up at Royal Liverpool on July 17-20. This will be cut to 70 after 36 holes.

The events will play under the title of the Open Qualifying Series, with events on the Australasian Tour, PGA Tour as well as the European Tour.

14 - The number of events that offer players the opportunity to qualify for golf's oldest Major Championship.

9 - Number of countries that have hosted events as part of the Open Qualifying Series, these include the USA, Ireland, Britain, France, South Africa, Thailand, Japan and Australia.

3 - There are 3 qualifying places available at each of the 4 Final Qualifying events hosted at Gailes Links, Hillside, Sunningdale New and Woburn.

19 - The number of Open Championship's Darren Clarke competed in before he claimed the top spot in 2011.

618 - The length of the longest hole played at any Open Course. The 618 yard hole is the 14th at St Andrews, where the Open Championship was held in 2010.

17 - The age of Tommy Morris Jnr when he won the tournament in 1868.

2 - The number of successive victories that both Tiger Woods and Pagraig Harrington have had at the Open Championship.

32 - Jack Nicklaus has made 32 final day appearances at the tournament, the most in Open Championship history.

269 - Tiger Woods completed the course at St Andrews in 2000 with a score of 269, giving him a total of 19 under par, the lowest total in relation to par since 1963.

5250000 - Total fund for the 2013 Open Championship with Phil Mickelson receiving £945,000.

50 - The top 50 players on the Official World Golf Ranking are given invitations to the Open Championship.

10 - The top 10 finishers from the 2013 Open Championship also automatically qualify for the 2014 Open Championship at Hoylake.
