Day 2 of Mercedes-Benz #TheOpenRoadtrip saw Jeremy Ellwood and reader Sean Wheatley enjoy aerial tranquility on the London Eye and a livelier pace at Silverstone..
Day 2: Thurs 17th July After the track and off-road challenges of Wednesday, the next test #TheOpenRoadtrip participants face is safely negotiating their Mercedes-Benz GLAs from Wimbledon into the heart of London and the London Eye. Some might say an even tougher driving test…
By half past ten the 10 participants from the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia are riding in air-conditioned bliss on one of the hottest days of the year 442 feet above the capital’s major landmarks.
After an Italian tapas-style meal at Tozi near Victoria, it’s up to Silverstone to test our manouevring skills in the GLA before being driven round the track, a-sliding and a-screeching, by a young man seemingly hell-bent on drastically reducing the tyre life of a super-fast Mercedes C63 AMG. Exhilarating, and sometimes slightly hair-raising stuff.
Good news for GM competition winner, Sean Wheatley and me - we come out top in the driving challenge, though some of our continental friends suggest familiarity with right-hand drive may have been a slight advantage. They probably have a point, but we refuse to concede it!
From here, it’s a short drive through the surprisingly beautiful Northamptonshire countryside to Fawsley Hall Hotel & Spa, a gorgeous tranquil haven where we rest and prepare ourselves for #TheOpenRoadtrip’s big golfing challenge at Hillside the next day.
Meanwhile, a young Irishman whose game was in tatters last year, and whose clubs were apparently no good, takes the Royal Liverpool Open by the scruff of the neck with a flawless opening 66, despite not having the game for our great links courses, according to some experts…!
