Europe's greatest ever final-day comeback was never going to be without incident. Here's what the players and captains had to say on the day...

Davis Love III - "That's golf. We didn't play well today. Ultimately this team really understands, it's just golf."

Jose Maria Olazabal - "I've been under pressure hitting shots, but today tops that. The first two days nothing went our way. We struggled on the greens, and this morning I felt a little change in that regard, and we just started making a few putts. The Americans started to miss. And winning those few matches, that was key."

Luke Donald - "We wanted to do it for Seve. We wanted to show our grit. It's going down in history. We talk about Brookline in '99 and losing that one. We wanted to come back and show that we could win from behind, too.

Justin Rose - "We are in shock. We wanted to believe, we really did want to believe but we had no illusions of how hard that day was going to be, four shots against a team that's played so well all week."

Ian Poulter - "I'm going to enjoy it, with the best team I've ever seen, and the best captain I've ever seen, and everyone else, because this right here is special."

Martin Kaymer - "Now I know how it really feels to win the Ryder Cup."

Rory McIlroy - "I was with a policeman, getting through traffic. I got here with about ten minutes to spare, put my shoes on, a couple of putts, just your average sort of warm-up back at the course."

Rory McIlroy - "I was just casually walking out of my hotel room and I got a phone call saying you've got 25 minutes until you tee off. I have never been so worried driving to a golf course before.

Sergio Garcia - "What a day. It was hard but we knew there was a chance. This was a team performance and the team have done an unbelievable job. I have no doubt that Seve was with me all day, because there's no chance I would have won my match if he wasn't."

Ian Poulter - "Chicago has been incredible. They have been loud and they have been supporting their team, and rightly so, it's been a tough week. But I can't actually believe what's happened. It's just unbelievable."

Jose Maria Olazabal "I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing."
