S55 irons
Golf Monthly Senior Staff Writer Paul O'Hagan tests the Ping S55 irons

GM verdict: The S series is not the mass market product in the Ping range. Instead, it's designed for accomplished players looking for a compact set that also features more forgiveness than you might expect from this sort of design. We applaud Ping for not rushing a set out since the release of the S56 in 2010. The new offering produces more distance through the air, without sacrificing the fantastic control. The shape looks great at address in both short and long irons. But... some will prefer a forged head when playing such a compact design. PGA pro verdict: These irons were a pleasure to use. They were very workable and easy to shape both ways. The design has subtle changes from its predecessor, but there's a marked difference in feel, which is now much softer. The look from all angles was very pleasing, and I was impressed with the finish. A great addition to an already excellent product line. Test team rating: Performance: 4/5 Visual appeal: 5/5 Innovation: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Overall: 4/5
Why you can trust Golf Monthly
Key technology:
A stabilising bar is narrower in the long irons and wider in the short irons. The face is now thinner and weight savings have allowed the centre of gravity to be moved lower. The lofts have also been strengthened (one degree in the pitching wedge, half a degree in the 6-iron, then progressively less through to the 3-iron, where there's no change).
Will suit:
Accomplished ball-strikers who are looking for extra distance.
