Dx2 Soft ball
Golf Monthly Senior Staff Writer Paul O'Hagan tests the new Wilson Staff Dx2 Soft golf ball
GM verdict: The new Dx2 ball offers impressive feel off the putter face and plenty of spin on approach shots. Although it’s not quite as soft as premium offerings, it isn’t too far off, which is an impressive feat considering many of those balls are double the price. You might think that the soft feel would come at the cost of durability, but this wasn’t the case during testing. The flight on full shots was very solid, particularly impressing in the wind. The impact sound with the driver wasn’t as loud as you get with many of the two-piece balls currently on the market, which will appeal to some. But... other balls at this price point will help players who really need added distance, and are willing to sacrifice feel. PGA pro verdict: This was a great product to review, as the feel was beautifully soft off every club in the bag. Pitching and chipping with this product was a real pleasure, as it gave the impression of the ball staying on the face for longer than most. In turn, that provided more feedback at impact. Distance off the tee didn’t appear compromised, giving a long and penetrating flight from both the tee and fairway. A very good option at this price. Test Team Rating: Performance: 3.5/5 Visual appeal: 4.5/5 Innovation: 3.5/5 Value: 4/5 Overall: 3.5/5
Why you can trust Golf Monthly
Key technology:
The Dx2 has the lowest compression of any ball available in the UK (40). This is designed to provide a softer feel and improved playability around the green. Added distance comes from an eight per cent larger core and a thinner cover. This delivers minimal spin off the driver, but progressively higher spin rates on approach shots.
Will suit... those players in the market for a soft feel in the mid-price bracket.
