Breaking 90: Busy few weeks
Break 90 PING Play Your Best challenger Rob Edwards gives Golf Monthly an update on his progress
It's been a busy few weeks for all us PYB golfers with the obvious highlight being a visit to the European Tour flagship event, ‘The PGA' at Wentworth. Seeing Tour professionals play live was a first for me and receiving tips from one was fantastic.
Upon meeting PING Tour pro Tom Lewis it was clear this was a very confident, professional young man. He got to work straight away taking us through his putting drills, alignment, distance control and ‘holing out'.
I have a bad habit of losing my timing on the range. Tom recommended I hit fewer balls and treat each one more like I would on the course. Just 20 balls and a quality practice session over, simple!
The lessons with Golf Monthly Top 25 Coach Steve Robinson have been coming thick and fast over the last few weeks. Robbo's philosophy is to build a swing from the ground up, strong legs, a solid base.
The main issue with my swing was creating an ‘out to in' swing plane. It's been quite a struggle to develop what feels like a completely new swing, but slowly and surely things are looking up, with a real solid swing starting to take shape. Robbo has given me a number of strange drills to practice. People of East Yorkshire, please don't be alarmed to see a man swinging an imaginary golf club at a wall.
The next events for my PYB challenge are an assessment with ‘Fitness4Golfers' and an East Riding Golf Union competition at Filey Golf Club.
One other point of interest was getting a ‘retweet' off Sergio Garcia, who followed me for approximately one day. So long, good friend!
