Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell shot a final round 68 to win the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond by two shots. His victory all but secures his place in the European team for September’s Ryder Cup at Valhalla. McDowell capitalised on a disastrous few holes from Simon Khan. The English man suffered two double bogeys in the last six holes to throw away the lead, but he had the consolation of gaining one of the two remaining spots at the Open Championship, as he was the highest places finisher who had not yet qualified for Birkdale.

McDowell was understandably delighted with his achievement: "This is just unbelievable, it really was a tough weekend's golf and it is a massive relief. I have never had a two-shot lead coming up the last in a professional tournament and I have to say I prefer it to the play-offs", he said, after securing the biggest winners’ cheque of his career. The win sees McDowell move from 10th to 6th in the Ryder Cup standings, which means that only an extraordinary run of bad results can see him miss out on a place in Nick Faldo’s team.

Khan, who eventually finished in fifth place had mixed feelings about his weekend’s work: “It’s great to be in the Open, but at the moment it feels pretty disappointing because I gave myself a lot of chances today”, he said afterwards.

South Africa’s James Kingston’s superb final round of 66 saw his finish second to McDowell, whilst Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez’s terrific form continued, as he finished tied for third spot with Richard Green.

Kenny Perry’s decision to concentrate on regular PGA Tour events, rather than the Majors, was further vindicated as he won the John Deere Classic in Illinios, after a three way play-off with Brad Adamonis and Jay Williamson. Perry bogeyed the last hole in regulation play, but recovered his composure to make par in the play-off, as both of his opponents found the water with their second shots. Williamson’s second placed finish was enough to see him secure the final place at this week’s Open Championship.

Perry was pleased with his strong showing: "I felt like I gave it away and they gave it back to me but I produced some key shots and that was a great win for me. It's just my time. I don't know why it is happening but things are just going my way”, he commented afterwards. His victory means that he has now won 3 of the last 5 tournaments that he has entered, and it puts him in within touching distance of making the US Team for September’s Ryder Cup at Valhalla.
