Wilson wins Honda Classic in Monday play-off

After 111 starts on the PGA Tour and 10 trips to Qualifying School, Mark Wilson birdied the third play-off hole to take the Honda Classic

American Mark Wilson birdied the third play-off hole in the Honda Classic to claim his first PGA Tour title.

Fellow American Boo Weekley had the best opportunity to win on Sunday but missed a three-foot putt on the 72nd hole for the win.

After bad light delayed the play-off, Wilson and Weekley joined Argentinian Jose Coceres and Colombia's Camilo Villegas on Monday to complete the event.

At the second play-off hole Villegas and Weekley were eliminated after both making bogey. This left Wilson and Coceres to play the par-3 17th. Wilson holed an eight-footer for his birdie and left Coceres with a similar putt to keep the tournament alive. But the Argentinian lipped out to give Wilson the win.

The 32-year-old Wilson will look back at the 16th on Sunday as a defining moment when he holed from 45 feet to save par. He would have won the event after 72 holes but called a two-shot penalty on himself on Friday because his caddie inadvertently gave Villegas club information.

Wilson has been to the PGA Tour School every season for the past 10 years. The win earns him $990,000 and an exemption on Tour through to the 2009 season.
