WGC Match Play Bracket Matchups

The WGC Match Play begins on Wednesday at the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas. Rory McIlroy will look to defend his title in an event that has seen a slight change of format.

We take a look at the potential matchups in a field made up of the top 64 players from the Official World Golf Rankings and they are placed into 16 groups of four.

The top 16 players will be the top player in each of the 16 groups.

The groups will play three days of round-robin with each of the group's winner advancing to the knockout rounds.

Group 1 will see one of the must-see matches this week, as a childhood rivalry is renewed, between Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Should Spieth navigate his way into the quarters, compatriot Dustin Johnson could await.

Group 2 will see number two seed, Jason Day, looking to carry his winning form from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the WGC Match Play Championship.

Group 3 sees defending champion Rory McIlroy looking to win his first tour event of the season with a potential quater-final match up with Adam Scott.

Group 4 sees Northern Trust Open winner and fourth seed Bubba Watson in a group alongside J.B Holmes, the winner could face Sergio Garcia in the round of 16.

However Bubba could come against Rickie Fowler, in potentially a brilliant quarter-final match up. Fowler, is the fifth seed in group 5 and will look to add to his Abu Dhabi victory in January.

Group 6 is headed by the in-form Adam Scott. The number six seed will be looking to add another victory after he won impressively in two consecutive event wins.

In Group 7, England's Justin Rose looking to build on his solid performance from last week. In his group also sees, number 28 seed Matt Kuchar.

Group 8 is headed by number 8 seed Dustin Johnson. Johnson could meet Jordan Spieth in the quarters, provided he overcomes group 9 favourites Patrick Reed or Phil Mickelson in the round of 16.

Group 9 arguably sees the toughest group in the championship with number nine seed Patrick Reed and number 17 seed Phil Mickelson heading the group.

Group 10 is headed by Danny Willett with a potential all-English clash with Justin Rose in the round of 16. However he faces a challenge from Brooks Koepka.

Group 11 sees the winner potentially facing Adam Scott in the last 16. Branden Grace is the eleventh seed following a tied-fifth place finish in Abu Dhabi.

The winner of Group 12 could potentially see a last 16 match up with Adam Scott.

Group 13 also sees another tough group, headed by thirteenth seed Sergio Garcia, with Lee Westwood also in the group.

Group 14 will be a very good group to watch with Zach Johnson and Shane Lowry heading a competitive group.

Some are calling Group 15 one of the hardest groups in the championship with Brandt Snedeker and Tshwane open winner Charl Schwartzel looking to progress to the round of 16, potentially against Jason Day.

Lastly, the winner group 16 could see a tie with Jordan Spieth in the round of 16. Perth International winner Louis Oosthuizen faces a tricky test from England's Andy Sullivan to win the group.
