Although he is not overdoing his return it is great to see he is getting himself set for a big 2017, the game of golf is certainly better with him on the fairways.
The fairytale comeback had looked to be on hold until next year as it was announced in USPGA week that Tiger Woods will not play golf again for the remainder of this season.
The US PGA Championship announced on Twitter that the 40-year-old had decided to withdraw from the year’s final major next week at Baltusrol and will be replaced in the field by Harold Varner III, who is ranked 155th in the world. Jason Day is the defending champion, having claimed his maiden major at Whistling Straits in 2015.
Woods, a 14-time major winner, is currently ranked 628th in the world rankings - there are 189 American players above him in the standings. His last tournament appearance was the Wyndham Championship in August of 2015, where he finished tied 10th. Since then, he has had two back operations, the last coming in October 2015, and he is still going through the rehabilitation process.
When Woods announced he would not be playing at the U.S. Open in June, he said he was “not physically ready” for competition and was “making progress, but not ready.” A month on, it would appear the situation hasn’t changed too much.
“Woods will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the 2016-17 season,” Woods' agent Mark Steinberg told GolfChannel.com.
Woods has won the US PGA Championship four times, just behind Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus with five titles each. There was hope that Woods may play in the 2016 Masters after posting a video of him swinging a club, but ultimately there was “no timetable to return to competitive golf.”
Woods’ last major championship victory came at the 2008 US Open, where he defeated compatriot Rocco Mediate in an epic 19-hole play-off at Torrey Pines. After the tournament, Woods discovered he had been playing with a broken leg and had an operation soon after.
