Thomas Bjorn today scored a record-breaking 62 in the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship, the lowest score in relation to par at the BMW PGA Championships
This morning Danish born Thomas Bjorn hit eight birdies and an eagle to score a 62 in the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Bjorn’s score of 10-under-par matched that of Robert Karlsson at the 2010 BMW PGA Championship but Karlsson’s score came at a time where par was 71 not 72.
Bjorn first appeared at the PGA Championships in 1996 however the Dane’s best performance to date was a tied 5th in 1998.
Today’s victor told reporters: "It's been a long time since I've actually had any sort of result on this golf course.”
Having not dropped a stroke all morning, Bjorn reached the turn in 32 with birdies at the 2nd, 4th and 7th.
The Dane then added an eagle three at the 12th to birdies at the 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th.

Bjorn managed to complete the entirety of his round before a torrential downpour brought play to a momentary halt due to the threat of lightning.
The player’s outstanding victory at Wentworth came as a surprise having missed the cut at the Spanish Open last weekend after scores of 75 and 78.
Bjorn commented: “Last week was awful and I was starting to feel a bit frustrated with things. It hasn’t been greater in practice either.
But reflecting on his win today, Bjorn added: "It was one of those days where you just walk off the golf course and you think, I want to keep playing.
Currently Shane Lowry is following Bjorn with eight under par but is still yet to complete the 18th.
Justin Walters is currently in third place having completed the course with a score of 67.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who currently is ranked world number seven, has announced that he has had to pull out of the event due to a knee injury after opening with a one over par 73.
Garcia commented: “This is the same thing that happened on Sunday at the Spanish Open.
“On the last four holes, it didn’t feel good at all."
Among the late starters from the morning was Rory McIlroy who announced his split from fiancée Caroline Wozniacki yesterday.
Commenting at Wentworth yesterday McIlroy said: “I just want to get my head into golf this week and concentrate on the tournament and try and do well.”
Play has now resumed at Wentworth following the storm.
