Steve Stricker wins the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run

Steve Stricker outlasted the rest of the field with excellent golf on Sunday as the players that had made the cut had to play 36 holes on the final day of the John Deere Classic.

The horrendous weather that had hit the course over the first few days was the reason for this extended day, but the scoring throughout was quite excellent.

Stricker had tied the course record with a 61 on the Saturday to move himself into contention in the tournament. He was then just one shot off the leaders of Matt Jones, Tim Petrovic and Darron Stiles heading into the final round.

Stricker then managed to finish with an outstanding 64 which included 5 birdies and an eagle 2 on the par-4 6th when he holed his 98 yard approach shot.

Stricker’s closest rival was Tim Petrovic who was 2 shots off the lead going up the last. But when he found the greenside lake and Stricker found the green, the tournament was over.

The win yesterday was his second Tour win this year and sixth in all, it also means he will be heading to the British Open, as well as winning 500 FedExCup points and moving into 2nd place in the FedExCup points table.

"I kind of felt like this could be my week," Stricker said. "I did that twice this week, holing out from the fairway, and that kind of got my momentum going, kind of made me feel like if I continue playing the way I've been playing, I'd have a chance of winning. When that went in, it felt like this could be the day."
