Stenson leads Deutsche Bank after 3rd round

The Swede could record his first win of the season in the FedEx Cup today.

Henrik Stenson leads by one shot heading into the final round at the Deutsche Bank Championship today.

The world no. 8 shot a third round 65 on Sunday to open up a narrow advantage over Rickie Fowler.

Stenson's round at TPC Boston included an eagle and four birdies, but Fowler's third consecutive round of 67 keeps him in the hunt to win for the third time this year.

Afterwards, Stenson said: "I was striking it nicely today. Putter was probably the best on the first round, on Friday.

"Yesterday was kind of a mix, and today the striking was better than my putting. But all in all in good shape and looking forward to tomorrow."

The Deutsche Bank Championship is the second of four FedEx Cup play-off events, with Stenson finishing second in the first, The Barclays.

The Swede won this tournament two years ago, but said yesterday he wouldn't be getting ahead of himself.

"Thinking about the outcome is the one thing that normally gets in the way of playing good golf," he said.

"That's always my challenge, and I'm going to try my best to stick to my game plan and my routine. If I keep on playing well I hope I have a chance."

Charley Hoffman and Brendon de Jonge, who have both lead the tournament at different stages, sit six shots back.

Australian Matt Jones and Sean O'Hair are two behind Stenson, with Englishmen Ian Poulter and Luke Donald trailing by eight and ten shots respectively.

While Jason Day is T25  having shot +2 on Sunday, Rory McIlroy is T64 after rounds of 70, 74 and 71.

There are a number of surprising absentees heading into the final round, including Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Brooks Koepka and Jimmy Walker.

Despite missing the cut, all of the above currently sit comfortably inside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings, meaning they will play in the third event, the BMW Championship.
