Stellar final round hands Austin Stanford St Jude win
Woody Austin produced one of the best rounds of the year to come from four shots back to claim the weekend’s PGA Tour title.

An eight-under par 62 sent shock waves through a high-class field as Woody Austin shot through the field on an action-packed Sunday afternoon to claim the Stanford St Jude title by five shots. The American played bogey-free golf for the last 49 holes and had an eagle and six birdies on fantastic final afternoon, to leave overnight leader Adam Scott and Englishman Brian Davis trailing in his wake.
The 43-year-old American, who has struggled all year, missing five cuts and finishing no better than tied for 18th, had been considering his future on Tour after going winless since the 2004 Buick Championship. However, after shooting the lowest final round on Tour this year and equalling the highest margin of victory in 2007, Austin heads to Oakmont for this week?s US Open in high spirits.
World number four Adam Scott had led from the very first round and looked in control, starting three shots clear of the field. After two birdies and an eagle from Austin in the first 10 holes, the pair were tied for the lead as Scott started his back nine. However, the Australian fell apart in the space of two holes, bogeying the 13th before triple-bogeying the 14th. In contrast Austin was now in full throttle, birdying 12, 14 and 17.
England?s Brian Davis, who has endured a difficult season missing six cuts, came quietly through the field with a bogey-free 66. It was enough to propel him into second place ? his best finish on the PGA Tour and worth
Some of the favourites for Oakmont this week suffered a chastening time at the TPC Southwind course, with Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen all finishing over par.
For Austin it was just the perfect day. "That was a true round of golf and was one of those surprises that we all get every once in a while. I'm just happy it happened to me on a Sunday when it really mattered."
