Spanish rookie wins in South Africa

There was something of a shock victory in South Africa on Sunday after 23 year-old Spaniard Alvaro Quiros defeated home favourite Charl Schwartzel by a stroke in the European Tour accredited Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.

Schwartzel, one of the game's fast rising young stars, had led by two strokes going into the final round but he had no answer to the young Spaniard's closing 67. Schwartzel eventually saw any hope of winning evaporate when he sent his approach to the 18th into the water. England's Lee Westwood had pushed strongly on the front nine but faded tamely coming home - his eventual score of 73 was only enough for him to clinch third place on -9, four strokes behind the winner.

"At the start of the day I didn't think I had a chance as I was four strokes behind Schwartzel and he is a very good young player," said Quiros, who was playing in only his fourth European Tour event.

"I has some luck but also played well, especially on the par-fives. Now I am a king for a week."
