Singh overcomes heartbreak to win in Japan
Asian Tour leader Jeev Milkha Singh won his fourth event of the year in the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup.
Asian Tour leader Jeev Milkha Singh has won his fourth event of the year in the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup.
Singh overcame personal tragedy to win the event and dedicated the victory to his wife only days after she gave birth to their stillborn child. Singh initially pulled out of the event, but was urged to play on, and won at the Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club on 12-under par.
Singh, who plays most of his golf on the European Tour came from behind in this, the Japan Tour’s season closing event. He finished with a 4-under 66 to edge out New Zealand’s David Smail and defending champion Brendan Jones by two shots.
Overnight leader Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand finished seven shots off the pace after a miserable final round 73.
Singh, who celebrates his 38th birthday next week, has now reached 36 in the World Rankings, a feat no Indian golfer has managed before. In addition he has wrapped up the Asian Tour Order of Merit for the second time. Singh is also the first player to top the £1million mark in a single season on the Asian Tour.
Singh said in a statement after his victory, "A lot happened in my family over the last few days and we have gone through quite a bit. Besides my wife, I want to dedicate this win to the family members from both my and my wife's sides."
He added: "It was God's will and I am sure there is something better for us. Already God has been very kind to us with this win.
