Rory McIlroy has pulled out of the 2016 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, saying he doesn't want to play four weeks in a row
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the 2016 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, saying he's missing the European Tour's flagship event because he doesn't want to play four weeks in a row.
The world number three is returning from a three week break to defend the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour this week.
After the Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow, McIlroy will go on to compete in the Players' Championship at TPC Sawgrass and the Irish Open, where he will be tournament host, at the K Club.
He'll then skip the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and head back to the PGA Tour to play in the the Memorial Tournament the week after, an event he'll use to prepare for the US Open at Oakmont.
Speaking about his schedule, the Northern Irishman said: "The reason I took three weeks off after Augusta was that I'm not going to have more than a week off until after the Ryder Cup in October.
"I'm playing here (Wells Fargo), next week at the Players, the Irish Open and then it's basically week on, week off from there.

"Memorial, week off, US Open, week off, French Open, week off, Open, week off, PGA, week off, Olympics, week off, FedEx Cup, Ryder Cup.
"There's a little bit of travel in there as well so it's a busy stretch coming up and you can't play every week."
Speaking about his game, the 27-year-old added: "I am still working on it but I feel better than I did when I put the clubs away for a couple of weeks. I'd got into a couple of bad habits leading up to the Masters and it's never really a good time to work on them - you are just trying to play golf and shoot a score.
"I took basically a full two weeks off from golf. I went home to Ireland for a week and then had a bit of a break; I was island-hopping for about 10 days, which was nice."
