World Number 10 Northern Irish golfer, Rory McIlroy, has announced his split from former Women’s Tennis Association Number 1, Caroline Wozniacki
2011 US Open winner, Rory McIlroy, announced on Wednesday morning that he has broken off his engagement with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
McIlroy, 25, is currently at Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship, the flagship event for the European Tour, which begins on Thursday.
Current Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) world number 14, Caroline Wozniacki, is due to compete in the French Open in Paris commencing on May 25.
The couple have been together for more than two years with McIlroy announcing the pair’s engagement over Twitter on New Year’s Eve in 2013, while they were in Sydney.
McIlroy posted a picture of the pair on his Twitter page adding: “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”
In a statement released through his management company on Wednesday morning, the 2012 PGA Championship winner said:

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.”
McIlroy added that sending out wedding invitations over the weekend made him aware that he was not “ready for all that marriage entails.”
He added: “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
Caroline Wozniacki is yet to release a statement concerning the split, however, speaking at Wentworth this morning the two time major champion said the decision to end the engagement had been mutual.
McIlroy’s last post on Twitter shows the couple dining at Nobu Monte Carlo restaurant on May 18.
In April 2014 former WTA world number one, Wozniacki, acted as McIlroy’s caddie during the Par 3 Contest prior to the start of the 2014 Master Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
The pair have always presented themselves as a sporting couple with Wozniacki acting as McIlroy’s caddie on several occasions and supporting him in events such as the 2014 Honda Classic at PGA National Resort in Florida.
McIlroy is due to start a pivotal season with the US Open at Pinehurst starting in less than a month on June 12.
