When an 18-year-old starts a tournament as 12/1 joint favourite then it's time to take note. Well, we have already and as good as young Matteo is, those odds aren't tempting. Then again neither were the odds of 6/1 on Lee Westwood last week. Still, time and again the favourite does romp home but it's no excuse to start lumping on the well-fancied big guns.
Miguel Angel Jimenez is an exception. He may be 12/1 joint favourite but on his home turf he's almost certain to put in a good performance. The same could be said of Alvaro Quiros, also 12/1, but we're not back at the same course as last year when Quiros won and Jimenez gets the 'home advantage nod' on the grounds of experience.
As always, unless a price really jumps out at us, we like to see where the value is. And a player who has started to impress us again is Alexander Noren. A couple of seasons ago the Swede looked certain to be a regular contender on the European Tour but he lost his form. This season he looks as though he's on the verge of reproducing some of his best golf and we like him at 33/1 this week.
Finally, we're backing Chris Wood at 66/1.The Bristol man is still looking for that breakthrough win and let's hope it's this week as we like those odds. He's been close before now without getting the job done but he's no choker. When he gets one he's a golfer who might just land a couple.
