LGU in breast cancer link-up

The Ladies' Golf Union (LGU) and Breakthrough Breast Cancer have entered into a partnership to increase the charity's fundraising capabilities and raise awareness of the disease throughout the UK.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer is the UK's leading charity committed to fighting breast cancer through research, campaigning and education. It was created in 1991 with the aim of raising £15 million to build the country's first breast cancer research centre. This goal was achieved in 1999, when the Prince of Wales opened the Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre.

The charity has not rested on its laurels and the link-up with the Ladies' Golf Union promises to deliver even more success. Two of the initiatives developed by the newly formed partnership are the £1000 Challenge and the selling of golf-related pin badges at clubs all over Britain.

The £1000 Challenge asks volunteers to raise £1,000 to honour a friend or relative that has suffered from the disease. Successful challenges will be recognised by the enngraving of names on a special glass wall in the Toby Robins Centre.

"We feel that ladies' golf is in a strong position to put something back into the wider community and are delighted to have formed a partnership with Breakthrough Breast Cancer," said Lesley Burn, the chief executive officer of the LGU.
