Joburg Open golf betting guide

A look at the latest betting odds and tips for the European Tour's Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in South Africa

Charl Schwartzel

The Joburg Open kicks off this week in South Africa and two time winner Charl Schwartzel is the obvious favourite with Ladbrokes at

7/2.

Schwartzel has an incredible record here having won the tournament back-to-back in 2010 and 2011 by six and four shots respectively.

Having picked two winning bets at last week's Africa Open I'm tempted to back the favourite again. He may well be a short price but a bet on Schwartzel this week could well be as good as a licence to print money.

He grew up playing this track as a junior and as an amateur and has spoken openly about how much he enjoys playing Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

As for the each-way bets I'm finding it hard to look past two of my picks from last week in Jaco Van Zyl and Thomas Aiken.

Van Zyl finished strongly over the weekend at East London and moved up to fourth place ensuring a payout to anyone who followed the tip. He is priced at

16/1 and could mount a serious challenge if he can build on his performance from last week.

Aiken is at

14/1, he finished third here last year so obviously has a bit of form around the course. The South African went off like a rocket in East London with a first round of nine-under-par but then couldn't quite maintain that form and ended up finishing in a tie for 14th place.

The other men looking to build on solid performances at the Africa Open will be Retief Goosen at

10/1, Tjaart Van Der Walt at

33/1 and Richard Sterne at

25/1.

Van Der Walt was second last week and finished in the top ten at the Joburg Open last year. Sterne is a former winner of the Joburg Open and made a sensational comeback from a year out with injury last week by finishing sixth.

If you fancy a big price bet I'd have a look at going each way on one of Scotland's Craig Lee at

100/1 or Argentina's Emiliano Grillo at

150/1.

Grillo showed he has what it takes when the chips were down last week by shooting a second round seven-under-par to make the cut and then finishing with a final round eight-under-par to elevate himself into a top ten position. His confidence will be sky high going into this tournament.
