Honda Classic betting guide - Camilo Villegas
Golf Monthly tipster Paul Krishnamurty is out to help you beat the bookies with his comprehensive betting guide for the tricky Honda Classic
Luke Donald, a former Honda champion and runner-up in 2008, cannot possibly be supported after amazingly conceding his match to Els when just one down on the 18th hole. If he was that concerned about his old wrist injury, its hard to see why we should trust it to be 100% just a few days later.
Robert Allenby boasts the best course form on offer, having finished 4th and 5th in the two renewals at PGA National. However, this is more than accounted for in the Aussie’s 20/1 odds, which don’t factor in a poor performance last week at Dove Mountain. Moreover, after so many near-misses, I’m beginning to wonder whether Allenby, an old favourite and at least formerly one of the most prolific finishers in the world, has forgotten how to win. If you’re going to side with any of the market leaders, I’d suggest going for one of the young, emerging superstars on show, CAMILO VILLEGAS and RORY MCILROY. Even here though, given the previous results on this course, I can’t see much sense in backing short-priced players each-way, so instead recommend a couple of win only bets. Getting Villegas right has been anything but easy of late. Having missed the cut poorly when carrying our money in Australia a fortnight ago, the Colombian prodigy produced outstanding golf for the first two rounds at Dove Mountain. His run was ended by matchplay king Geoff Ogilvy, but there was enough there to suggest a third PGA title is around the corner. This course would appear as likely place as any for that third title, as Villegas was one of those four play-off candidates back in 2007.
