Golf Monthly's week that was

The week started with Nick Bayly giving you the latest from Florida, where the PGA Merchandise Show had arrived in Orlando. Don’t be jealous, for as we were all stuck in snow, Florida was wet. That didn’t dampen the pros’ spirits, however, as Ian Poulter, Boo Weekley and Lorena Ochoa all turned out to show off their skills and the odd new line of clothing. New equipment featured the Callaway Big Bertha Diablo driver, fairway wood and balls, but there was lot's more. 

Unfortunately, the bad weather got some of us down. On Monday (‘Snow Day’), no doubt some of us were caught up in a sense of child-like exuberance as we rushed out to play. But, judging by the Golf Monthly Forum, the lack of golf has upset the routine. Poor ‘Murphthemog’ can’t even putt indoors because his cats chase the ball. Frustrating times.  

Last week’s golf ended with two very different winners. Nineteen-year-old Rory McIlroy claimed his first European Tour win at the Dubai Desert Classic. Cue comparisons with Tiger Woods. Just a few weeks ago the Ulsterman was battling for a US Masters spot. Now, at 16th in the world rankings, he’s not a bad shout for the Green Jacket. Meanwhile, veteran Kenny Perry won his 13th PGA Tour title at the FBR Open in Phoenix. Quite a contrast.  

For the golf punters out there, it was time to focus on the Buick Invitational. Paul Krishnamurty gave you his weekly betting guide for the PGA Tour event with the Race to Dubai taking a week’s rest. There was no rest for Padraig Harrington, however, in the field despite undergoing eye surgery.

Heading into the weekend we’ve given you a review of a few wedges. What with the weather at the moment, there might not be much of a call for a new 60° wedge, maybe just some new thermals. But, it’s food for thought nonetheless, and with spring fast approaching, you’ll need to keep an eye on what’s on the market so your bag’s ready for action.

Talking of bad weather, it took the GM team a few days to come to terms with the postponement of Sunday’s first Order of Merit day for 2009. Neil Tappin had promised good things with the new TaylorMade R9 driver, confident he’d put it to the same use as Sergio Garcia. We’ll have to wait and see.
