The Golf Foundation is staging a Golf Roots festival and Tour player clinic on June 25 during the European Senior Tour’s The De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship, at Slaley Hall, Northumberland.
Newcastle and Northumberland is a key area for the 2009 Golf Roots project, a national Golf Foundation initiative to introduce urban youngsters to golf and the sport’s positive benefits. Sixteen urban areas are involved, offering ‘hard to reach’ youngsters from all backgrounds and abilities the chance to progress in golf at local golf clubs and driving ranges.
The Golf Foundation is the leading golf charity and is committed to the sporting and social development of young people through golf.
Thanks to support from the European Tour and the team at Slaley Hall, the Foundation is able to stage a unique day of activities. In the morning 60 young people from local schools will take part in a Golf Xtreme festival, which is a fun form of golf with slightly lighter clubs and less-distance golf balls, designed for new players aged 11-16.
Golf Xtreme is a first step before the young people take lessons with a PGA professional and get started with 'proper golf' at a club or driving range. Specially trained young volunteers will be leading the festival. Young volunteers are a key focus of Golf Roots as they can make a strong impact as mentors for young juniors. In the afternoon, 24 youngsters will attend a coaching clinic, presided over by Senior Tour players provided by the European Senior Tour.
