Matthew Goggin - who narrowly missed out to Geoff Ogilvy in last week's Australian PGA Championship - has closed round 1 of the Australian Open with a course-record equalling 65 to finish seven-under with Stephen Dartnall and Ewan Porter.
Goggin hit six birdies on the front nine at the Royal Sydney on Thursday. Dartnall carded six birdies and an eagle, whilst Porter birdied three of the last four holes to join the pair at the top of the leaderboard.
"It's always nice to get back into the trench straight after playing well the week before," Goggin said.
"I got off to a great start today. It's only the first round - there's a lot of golf to play - but hopefully I'm in a similar position on Sunday."
Australian PGA winner and favourite, Geoff Ogilvy shot an even round of 72.
It was John Daly, however, who stole the show on day 1 of the Open after shooting 78 and then taking his frustrations out on a spectator's camera by throwing it at a tree.
