Germans lift WGC World Cup

Dual US Masters champion Bernhard Langer clinched the second World Cup title of his career as he and partner Marcel Siem secured a memorable playoff victory for Germany over Scotland's Marc Warren and Colin Montgomerie at a rain-sodden Sandy Lane resort in Barbados on Sunday.

Montgomerie holed a crucial par putt on the 72nd green to take the event into sudden death after both nations had finished on -16. Germany then prevailed at the first extra hole after Montgomerie failed to repeat the heroics of earlier and missed another par putt, this time from five feet.

It meant that Germany's excellent closing round of 66 was enough to win a second title, after Langer partnered Torsten Gidoeon to victory in 1990. Swedish pair Henrik Stenson and Carl Petterson had been warm favourites entering the rain delayed final day but could not hang on to their two stroke overnight lead, eventually three putting on the final green and missing out on a playoff.

Warren and Montgomerie carded a 69 in the final round and had two real chances on the 15th and 16th to secure the title outright, but failed to make birdie putts on each occasion. Sweden eventually finished alone in third place, with South Africa one place further back in fourth. Defending champions Wales produced a solid effort in finishing eighth, but English pair Luke Donald and David Howell, the pre-tournament favourites, will be disappointed with their final placing of fifteenth.

"Every trophy is special, but in the last few years I haven't won a lot," said the 49 year-old Langer after scooping a share of the $1.4m first prize.

"It's not easy to believe that sixteen years after my first win in this event I am here again. It proved that the golf ball doesn't know how old you are!"
