Faldo lands top US TV role

Nick Faldo yesterday confirmed that he has agreed a deal with CBS Sports as its top TV golf analyst for next season, meaning that his appearances on the golf course will become a rarity. The six-time Major winner will replace Lanny Wadkins in the commentary booth alongside Jim Nantz.

The 49 year-old Englishman (pictured in the TV studio) has spent a lot of time over the last three years working alongside Paul Azinger for rival US network ABC, and his distinctive style has clearly impressed viewers and TV bosses alike. CBS, who will begin a six-year contract with the USPGA Tour next season, moved quickly to sign him after Wadkins refused to accept a reduced role with the network.

CBS has the broadcasting rights to The Masters, and Faldo will not feature in next year's field after he confirmed that he would be working in his new role instead. He may even be allowed to wear one of his three green jackets in the commentary box, as Augusta National rules state that owners of the prized garments may wear them on the course. He will continue his role for ABC at The Open next summer, meaning that he will feature as an analyst at three out of the four Major championships in 2007. The only Major he will not be commentating on is the US Open, the rights to which are owned by NBC Sports.

"I will be in the tower at Augusta for the whole week," Europe's 2008 Ryder Cup captain said yesterday.

"I will not be playing and that was a major part of my decision. I view this as a fabulous opportunity for me, which may only come round once every ten years. My playing days are not over, but my main priority now will be CBS."
