Crowne Plaza Invitational preview
The PGA Tour moves onto the Colonial CC. One thing is for sure, a pure ball striker will win this week.
Tournament: Crowne Plaza Invitational
Course: Colonial CC
Prize fund: $6,000,000
Course details: par 70, 7,054 yards. A course rich in tradition, the winner is presented with a Scottish royal tartan plaid jacket and his name is inscribed onto the Wall of Winners. The course is nicknamed ?Hogan?s Alley? after the great Ben Hogan who won five titles at Colonial. This is a pure ball-striker?s course that puts a premium on precision.
Key holes: The ?Horrible Horseshoe? at Colonial, which begins at the 3rd hole, marks a trio of tough holes capable of destroying rounds. The 472-yard, par-4, 5th stands out as the most difficult ? the tee-shot has to be precise to miss a ditch to the left and a river to the right.
The lowdown: The field is not the strongest the PGA Tour has seen this year but that will take nothing away from the winner who will have to play pure golf ? something South African Trevor Immelman is renowned for. Jim Furyk?s unique but repeatable swing spurs consistency. While David Toms has made the cut in all 12 of the 2007 competitions he has entered and must be a contender.
Contenders: Trevor Immelman, Jim Furyk, David Toms.
