2008 Ricoh Women's Open field takes shape
This year’s Ricoh Women’s British Open will enjoy the strongest and most international field to date, as Sunningdale hosts the event for the fourth time. Every player in the world’s top 30 will be present, including former world number 2 Annika Sorenstam, who is set to retire at the end of this season.
126 of the 144 places for the Ricoh Women s British Open are now confirmed, and so far 25 nationalities will be competing, making it the most international field of all time. The final 18 places will be claimed in Monday s final qualifying tournament at the Berkshire Golf Club, and those lucky 18 will join a star-studded field, with an astonishing 51 Major titles between them.
Defending champion Lorena Ochoa, who triumphed at St Andrews las year, is optimistic about her chances for the week: I am really looking forward to defending my title at the Ricoh Women s British Open and I am very excited about playing at Sunningdale again. I finished 4th there in 2004 so I know the course suits my game and I have a great chance.
Former World Number 2, and ten-time Major winner Annika Sorenstam will be retiring from the game at the end of this season. She explained, I'm sure it will be quite emotional, just knowing that it will be the last one. But I'm also very competitive and I'm also trying to finish this season on a high note, really trying to be competitive in every event. It will be a tough good‑bye. But it's a decision I made, and I'm excited about the future. Other players who will take part include World Number 4 Paula Creamer, and British favorites Catriona Mattew and Laura Davies.
The Ricoh Women s British Open was founded by the Ladies Golf Union in 1976 and gained Major status in 2001. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and is operated on behalf of the Ladies Golf Union by IMG, the world s largest sports marketing company.
