Charnwood Forest Golf Club's captain, Steve Ackling, is taking on a golfing endurance challenge which involves recreating a remarkable historical feat dating back to 1913. The charity golf challenge is to complete 150 holes of golf in under 14 hours.
As an ambassador for a local charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, Ackling has undertaken many personal fundraising challenges since retirement, including a number of UK half marathons.
Upon becoming captain, Ackling wanted to do something special for charity which involved his passion for golf and also celebrated the fantastic history of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire's oldest golf club.
In 1913 Charnwood Forest member, Harry Flude, accepted a wager that he couldn't complete 150 holes of the golf course in under 14 hours. Teeing off at 6.30am on June 1, Flude set about his challenge and by 7.38pm he'd completed the 150 holes in just 13 hours and eight minutes.
Remarkably, his speed did not impact his scoring with 51 pars and nine birdies recorded with an average of gross 46 for each round of nine holes.
Steve's challenge is to repeat Flude's feat on June 1 by teeing off at 5am, with the aim to raise over £1,500 for the Captains' Charities which are Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and Teenage Cancer Trust.
