University of Liverpool Golf Club Alumni Day

This event is now in its fourth year and has provided an opportunity for our golfing alumni to return to the scene of their student sporting days. If any former University of Liverpool Golf Club members are keen to return please contact Stuart Wade on swade@liv.ac.uk or on 0151 794 8767

Royal Liverpool

The University of Liverpool Golf Club was founded in 1924 and played on many courses around the Liverpool area over the next 40 years. It discovered a regular home in January 1964 when it played Manchester at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake. Since that fixture it has played all its home matches at the course lovingly described by Bernard Darwin as: "Hoylake, blown upon by mighty winds, breeder of mighty champions."

During the 1970s and 1980s Liverpool were the most consistently successful university golf club in England and Wales winning 16 trophies. Through the continued support of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club and the University of Liverpool Sports Scholarship Programme we are planning for more successful days in the future.

Top 100 Courses Rankings 2010: Royal Liverpool

The increased focus on golf has also created a day aimed at former members of the university club. This event is now in its fourth year and has provided an opportunity for our golfing alumni to return to the scene of their student sporting days and tackle the challenges that Hoylake continues to offer. The recent course changes which were completed in 2010 will provide a stern test and will in time test the world's best women golfers in 2012 and the world's best male golfers at The Open in 2014.

At the 2010 event conditions for golf were excellent as a light breeze on a sunny spring day promised a day of good scoring. Forty-nine of our golfing alumni returned and accepted the challenge of a course that has staged the Open 11 times since 1897. The oldest player on the day was Henry Branch of Royal Mid Surrey who was a team member in the mid 1950s and gave an entertaining account of a lifetime in golf.

The most notable performance was our winner for the third successive year. Rob Stevens of Enville Golf Club in the Midlands shot a four-under-par 68 and received the new scratch trophy at the Dinner with has only one name on; his for 2008, 2009 and 2010! The Alumni Golf Day appears to have re-invigorated his golf and he continues to set a very high standard.

This year's event takes place on April 15, 2011.
