Scotland bids for 2019 Solheim Cup

Scotland has hosted the tournament on two previous occasions, in 1992 and 2000.

Scotland will aim to bring the 2019 Solheim Cup to Gleneagles, five years after Europe won the Ryder Cup on the same course.

The Scottish Government have supported VisitScotland's Events Directorate in trying to host the women's game's equivalent of the biennial men's tournament.

Bernard Murphy, Glenagles' Managing Director, believes there are wider benefits to hosting such a prestigious tournament outside of golf.

"The positive impact it had on tourism and Scotland’s global reputation should not be underestimated," he said.

"Hosting the Ryder Cup was a great opportunity for Gleneagles and Perthshire, and an experience none of us will ever forget."

The Scottish Ladies Golf Association, the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland were among those consulted on the selection process for the chosen course.

Catriona Matthew, Scotland's no. 1 ranked player, said the tournament's growth in stature would continue if held at Gleneagles.

"Golf in Scotland is a national past-time and the Scottish crowds would come out to support The Solheim Cup in droves," she said.

"I’ve been fortunate to play in seven European teams but I have no doubt that a Solheim Cup in 2019 at Gleneagles would be the biggest and best yet and further help to enhance the stature of the event and women’s golf as a whole."

The tournament would be held in August or September and early crowd estimates predict around 30,000 people per day would attend.

The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles was won by Team Europe, lead by Paul McGinley, and First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon cited their victory when backing the bid for the women's equivalent.

"Last year Scotland showed what it can do on the world-stage when it not only held, but significantly enhanced, some of the biggest events in the world of sport," she said.

"The 2014 Ryder Cup was a magnificent spectacle and will be remembered for many years to come, while the XX Commonwealth Games was another huge success story for our country. We want to do the same thing with The Solheim Cup in 2019."

Scotland has previously hosted the event in 1992 at Dalmahoy Country Club and in 2000 at Loch Lomond GC.

This year's tournament will be held at St. Leon-Rot GC in Germany, where Europe will defend the title they won at Colorado GC in 2013.
